Without Control is the debut album from Argentinian duo Fernando Pulichino and Julian Sanza, formerly known for their productions as Silver City and Ciudad Felix, as well as being part of Ralph Lawson’s 2020 Soundsystem (on keys and bass). Released by Silicone Soul, of Scotland’s now pioneering tech house Soma Records’ own imprint Darkroom Dubs, there’s more than a few comparisons you can draw between the two acts. Similarly to Silicone Soul, new act The Spirals marry space funk, disco and tech house with an organic and particularly emotive or uplifting edge. Their ability as accomplished live musicians, producers, programmers and songwriters shines throughout the complete collection of both instrumental and vocal tracks.
The duo’s sounds are jam-packed with emotive melodies, lush atmospheric synths, acidic bleeps, catchy vocal samples and swinging funky bass lines. With their title track and single Without Control you get the feeling the pair can also be accessible enough when needed and get the crosss-over potential to appeal to a mainstream audience, which always helps with radio airplay, charting and album sales.
As well as feel-good 70s space funk and disco, electro, electro house and techno influences are also present. At times the pair are perhaps reminiscent of the tech house we heard back in the mid to late ‘90s, and The Cowboy will leave you harking back to the American west coast acid house sound of Hardkiss, however there’s enough variety to keep you interested throughout.
Their debut album, Without Control is the perfect summer accompaniment and a triumph for the Argentinean duo. They have crafted a unique record of sublime deep electronic funk. All the tracks are effortlessly joyous and a thrilling excursion of sizzling synths, live drums, Detroit- tinged pads, deep atmospherics, with funky ass b-lines that even Bootsy Collins would be proud of! Simply music to make you smile and make you wanna dance, surely the true essence of house music?
The Spirals will be supporting the release of Without Control with a full live tour.
