Stephan Bodzin: Liebe ist Luna

Techno’s golden boy, Stephan Bodzin from Germany, touched down in Iceland for 48 hours in the beginning of June. A Grapevine journalist met with him to talk about the ongoing beat.
You played in Reykjavik on Saturday June 2nd, can you tell me about that?
I expected a strange night in Iceland, somehow, and it turned out to be one. I was playing an Eve Online party at Nasa, I didn’t anticipate that. Different people from the other gigs I’ve played, but a surprisingly good party. People went crazy and I definitely had fun.

Your show was a part of a larger tour, how has the tour been going?
Good, very good, no bad gigs, each club packed every night, what can I say? I really enjoyed my time on the tour the last 18 months; it has been a good party. This part of the tour is called “Liebe Ist.. LIVE-tour” because of the release of my new LP, Liebe Ist. That will be over in the fall, but I will keep on travelling.

Can you describe your performance?
I perform live or play a DJ set. Sometimes I do both, as last night, depends on how much equipment I can travel with. The live set is new, last night I was performing it for the 5th or 6th time. I’m working hard on it at the moment. I’ve got many ideas; it’s a small baby and has still to grow.

What do you think is the importance of a live electronic performance?
It is not necessarily that a performance is important, but I am a musician, I can play live, I want to play live, it makes sense for me to play live.

During your set you project what you are doing on some sort of a touch pad onto a screen, why is that?
That is just to show people I am not just playing an Ableton-Live set. People who do that only use one file and tweak it. I’m playing a real live set and I want people to know that I am doing so.

Now I want to turn to your music. Can you describe how an idea you get for a song turns into something that gets put out on a label?
I make a track in my studio and the sound depends on the day and the mood I am in at the time. After I have the final version I start thinking about finding a fitting label for the song. I show it to some people and things usually take off from there. The exception to this is when I work with Marc Romboy, then the working sessions are divided between our labels Systematic and Herzblut.

Can you tell me about your label, Herzblut?
The idea of the label is to be really free, to do what ever I want, when I want. I have released records on so many good labels in the past two years. Big labels like Get Physical, Systematic, Gigolo and Datapunk to name a few. When I produced the first Herzblut tracks last year I thought that the only platforms to release the tracks would be Kompakt or maybe Border Community. Those labels get so many good artists in the melody stuff that I am making that it made no sense for me to go with my music there, so I launched a new label.

Where does Herzblut fit in with other labels in the techno scene?
Herzblut is in a group of labels under Plantage 13 which includes Kaliber, Giant Wheel, Rekorder, Spielzeug, Confused, Pickadoll and many more. My good friend Jan Langer in Bremen is the founder and manger of Plantage 13. He also manages my label and books my tour. He is the best man in the techno scene I know. He has lived techno since he was 15-16 years old and knows just about everything there is to know about the scene.

Where do you live and work?
I am also based in Bremen.

How is the techno scene in Bremen?
There is no scene in Bremen, well maybe a small scene, two or three clubs, but not really exciting ones. I never go partying in Bremen. I’ve got many friends there, it has a nice bar- and restaurant scene and the city is arty somehow. It is a good place to live and to work, but not to party. It is perfect place to come back to after three days of partying. I live by the river, it is very beautiful, it’s my home. I thought about moving to Berlin, but it is too hectic. At the moment I am thinking about moving to Lisbon, which is a great place and has a young, upcoming techno scene.

If you don’t party in Bremen, what do you think is the best place to party these days?
That is hard to say. All the people on the street on a Saturday night in downtown Reykjavik at five o’clock in the morning, I thought was really impressing. In Germany, go to Berlin, there you have everything all the night. Whatever you want, whenever you want, but it is over-hyped. I’ve been to Montreal a couple of times, it’s been fun every time, they’ve got crazy people up there. Of course in cities like London and Barcelona people know how to party.

You release music under a lot of names, why is that?
I would not be where I am if I had released music just under Stephan Bodzin. These different names allow me to develop different sides of my music. More importantly they allow me to disguise my music, if I may say so. No DJ wants to have 20 records by the same artist in his bag. This way a DJ does not know if half of the records in his bag are Stephan Bodzin records.

Where do see electronic music going in the next couple of years?
Forward. As long as there are innovations in the instruments used to make electronic music, the music will advance. I think the minimal genre will fade out, everything that gets big so quick is not sustainable. You only need one very influential individual like Jan Langer deciding minimal is not the way to go. Electronic music will evolve onward in a continuous process though sub-genres will fade in and out.

You travel with a female companion, who is she?
Her name is Luna, we are not married, but I am working on that. She is my greatest inspiration and strength. She has played a big part in my music, telling me if tracks are no good and I have to throw them away or if a track has reached its full potential and is ready to be released. She has also started making music, and her music is very promising. I think she might be the future of the family.

Tocando en vivo con ese nuevo set up que usa con los touch screen pads, etc es un pionero.

La primera vez que veo a alguien haciendo eso...la verdad que esta bastante bueno..estos ultimos dias he estado mas o menos informandome acerca del asunto..es bastante complejo parece.

Que grosso es Bodzin. Me encantaria verlo en vivo. Lo que estoy escuchando de el, ultimamente se zarpa.

Muchacho de oro de Techno, Stephan Bodzin de Alemania, aterrizada en Islandia por 48 horas en el principio de junio. Un periodista de la vid satisfizo con él para hablar del golpe en curso.
¿Tú jugaste en Reykjavik el sábado 2 de junio, puedes decirme sobre eso?
Esperé que una noche extraña en Islandia, de alguna manera, y ella resultara ser una. Jugaba un partido en línea de la víspera en la NASA, yo no anticipé eso. Diversa gente de los otros gigs que he jugado, solamente un partido asombrosamente bueno. La gente iba loca y tenía definitivamente diversión.

¿Tu demostración era una parte de un viaje más grande, cómo el viaje ha estado yendo?
¿Bueno, muy bueno, ningunos malos gigs, cada club embalé cada noche, qué puedo decir? Realmente gocé de mi tiempo en el viaje los 18 meses pasados; ha sido un buen partido. Esta parte del viaje se llama “Liebe Ist. Vivir-viajar” debido a el lanzamiento de mi LP nuevo, Liebe Ist. Ése encima en la caída, pero guardaré en viajar.

¿Puedes describir tu funcionamiento?
Realizo vivo o juego un sistema de DJ. Hago a veces ambos, como ayer por la noche, dependo con de cuánto equipo puedo viajar. El sistema vivo es nuevo, ayer por la noche que lo realizaba por la 5ta o 6ta vez. Estoy trabajando difícilmente en él en el momento. Tengo muchas ideas; es un bebé pequeño y tiene todavía crecer.

¿Qué piensas eres la importancia de un funcionamiento electrónico vivo?
No es necesariamente que un funcionamiento es importante, pero soy músico, yo puedo jugar vivo, yo deseo jugar vivo, él tengo sentido para que juegue vivo.

¿Durante tu sistema proyectas lo que estás haciendo en una cierta clase de un cojín del tacto sobre una pantalla, por qué eres ése?
Eso es justo demostrar que Ableton-Vive la gente que no soy el jugar justo sistema. Poblar quiénes hacen ese solamente archivo del uso uno y lo pellizcan. Estoy jugando un verdadero vivo sistema y quisiera que la gente supiera que esté haciendo tan.

Ahora deseo dar vuelta a tu música. ¿Puedes describir cómo una idea tú consigue para las vueltas de una canción en algo que consigue puesto hacia fuera en una etiqueta?
Hago una pista en mi estudio y el sonido depende del día y del humor que estoy adentro en ese entonces. Después de que tenga la versión final yo comenzar a pensar de encontrar un apropiado para etiquetar para la canción. La demuestro que a alguna gente y cosas sacar generalmente de allí. La excepción a esto es cuando trabajo con el orujo Romboy, entonces las sesiones de trabajo se divide entre nuestras etiquetas sistemáticas y Herzblut.

¿Puedes decirme sobre tu etiqueta, Herzblut?
La idea de la etiqueta es estar realmente libre, hacer lo que deseo siempre, cuando deseo. He lanzado expedientes en tan muchas buenas etiquetas en los últimos dos años. Las etiquetas grandes como consiguen físicas, sistemáticas, Gigolo y Datapunk nombrar algunos. Cuando produje el primer Herzblut sigue el año pasado I pensado que las únicas plataformas para lanzar las pistas serían Kompakt o confinarían quizá a comunidad. Esas etiquetas consiguen a tan muchos buenos artistas en la materia de la melodía que estoy haciendo que no tuvo ningún sentido para que vaya con mi música allí, así que lancé una nueva etiqueta.

¿Dónde Herzblut cabe adentro con otras etiquetas en la escena del techno?
Herzblut está en un grupo de etiquetas debajo de Plantage 13 que incluya Kaliber, rueda gigante, Rekorder, Spielzeug, confundido, de Pickadoll y de muchos más. Mi buen amigo enero Langer en Bremen es el fundador y el manger de Plantage 13. Él también maneja mi etiqueta y reserva mi viaje. Él es el mejor hombre de la escena del techno que sé. Él tiene techno vivido puesto que él era 15-16 años y sabe apenas sobre todo allí debe saber sobre la escena.

¿Dónde vives y trabajas?
También me basan en Bremen.

¿Cómo está la escena del techno en Bremen?
No hay escena en Bremen, pozo quizá una escena pequeña, dos o tres clubs, sino no realmente el excitar. Nunca voy a partying en Bremen. Tengo muchos amigos allí, tiene una barra agradable y la escena del restaurante y la ciudad es arty de alguna manera. Es un buen lugar a vivir y a trabajar, pero no al partido. Es lugar perfecto a volverse después de tres días de partying. Vivo al lado del río, él soy muy hermoso, él soy mi hogar. Pensé de trasladarse a Berlín, pero es demasiado agitada. En el momento que estoy pensando de trasladarse a Lisboa, que es un gran lugar y tiene una escena joven, próxima del techno.

¿Si no lo haces partido en Bremen, qué piensas eres el mejor lugar al partido actualmente?
Eso es duro de decir. Toda la gente en la calle en una noche de sábado en Reykjavik céntrico a las cinco de la mañana, pensé realmente impresionaba. En Alemania, van a Berlín, tú tiene todo toda la noche. Lo que deseas, siempre que desees, solamente está sobre-hyped. He sido a Montreal un par de épocas, él he sido diversión cada vez, ellos tengo la gente loca para arriba allí. Por supuesto en ciudades como Londres y Barcelona la gente sabe al partido.

¿Lanzas música bajo muchos de nombres, por qué eres ése?
No sería donde estoy si había lanzado música apenas debajo de Stephan Bodzin. Estos diversos nombres permiten que desarrolle diversos lados de mi música. Permiten más importantemente que disfrace mi música, si puedo decir tan. Ningún DJ desea tener 20 expedientes del mismo artista en hola s bag. This way a DJ does not know if half of the records in his bag are Stephan Bodzin records.

¿Dónde ves música electrónica el entrar en los pares siguientes de años?
Delantero. Mientras haya innovaciones en los instrumentos usados para hacer música electrónica, la música avanzará. Pienso que la voluntad mínima del género se descolora hacia fuera, todo que consiga grande así que aprisa que no es sostenible. Necesitas solamente a un individuo muy influyente como enero Langer que decide que mínima no sea la manera de ir. La música electrónica se desarrollará hacia adelante en un proceso continuo aunque se descoloran los secundario-géneros quieren adentro y hacia fuera.

¿Viajas con un compañero femenino, que es ella?
Su nombre es Luna, nos no casan, pero estoy trabajando en ése. Ella es mi inspiración y fuerza más grandes. Ella ha hecho una parte grande en mi música, diciéndome si las pistas no son ningún bueno y tengo que lanzarlas lejos o si una pista ha alcanzado su capacidad máxima y es listo ser lanzado. Ella también ha comenzado a hacer música, y su música es muy prometedora. Pienso que ella puede ser que sea el futuro de la familia.
