Interview With Abobe & Beyond
Above & Beyond's debut artist album is called Tri-State and will be released on March 6th, 2006. See below for an exclusive album interview with the guys. The launch single, Alone Tonight has already had 9 plays on BBC Radio1 and will be released on February 27th, complete with remixes from Matthew Dekay, Kid Lopez & Disciplines of Sound and Ronski Speed.
Q. So how’s it going with the album?
J. The album is shaping up very well indeed and I believe we have some really great songs on there. It's been interesting for us to work on an album, as we spent the last five years making singles for clubs. Working on an album is very liberating, as you don't have to think about keeping a dancefloor moving, you can concentrate on the music. I'm sure people who like our music in clubs will love it, and of course there will be club mixes of many of the tracks. I'm hoping we'll be one of the first acts to pull off an album in this genre with real quality and sincerity, just as bands like Underworld did years ago. It's not a token album that's there to serve a purpose, it's raw and real - what you're getting is just the three of us with our vocalists.
Q. What can we expect?
P. Expect the unexpected! We've really gone back to the roots of the music we love: we wanted everything on there to be a strong song, as this is what makes a great album. We've been working on “Tri-State” now for a good few years, and have been writing tons of material. We now have the difficult task of choosing the tracks that will make it onto the album! There are songs ranging from chilled, movie-soundtrack things to dark, clubby moments and uplifting tracks. “Tri-State” won't sound like a DJ mix compilation, though; we're aiming to do something more unique.
Q. Why is it called “Tri-State”?
Tony: It’s a title that seems to fit a lot of things. On one level there are three of us in Above & Beyond, with three different unique personalities and different nationalities (Jono is British, Paavo is Finish and I’m Irish). On another level we have three different aspects that are involved in this album – we are producers, we are DJ’s and we are musicians/songwriters. And then there are the Three Realms of Existence, the three states of matter and the three dimensions. Three is the magic number!
Q. What tracks do we know already?
J. "Alone Tonight" and "Air For Life". I think that's it! It's all fresh material other than that, and we're keen to hold back on showing it to the public for a while - it's amazing how quickly people regard tracks as "old" in the internet age. We could have dug up our catalogue and put some of those tracks on there, but we're more interested in doing new things rather than dwelling on the past.
Q. Who else is on the album, singers etc?
P. We've been working with some amazing singers, including Richard Bedford (who sings Alone Tonight and another song), Ash from Luminary, an exciting new British singer called Hannah Thomas and we've done a beautiful new track with Zoë Johnston too.
Q. Any surprises?
T. We are really trying hard to move forward all the time. Hopefully it will be a feast of pleasant surprises.
