FACT mix 133: Lazer Sword

Cita:
This Friday’s FACT mix comes from Low Limit and Lando Kal, together known as Lazer Sword.

Hailing from San Fransisco and New York respectively, Lazer Sword have been impressing us for a while with their hard-wired blend of hip-hop and electro, and with a new six-track EP, Golden Handshake out this week on Glasgow’s Numbers label, we figured there was no better time to get them behind the boards for a FACT mix.

Recent FACT favourites Krystal Klear, Zackey Force Funk, Machinedrum and Lone’s ‘Waves Imagination’ feature, alongside hip-hop jams from E-40 and Gucci Mane and stone cold grime classics in ‘Haunted’ and ‘Rhythm ‘n’ Gash’. There’s even some Roger Troutman. Tuck in.
Tracklist:

1. Roger Troutman ”Superman”
2. Krystal Klear ”Throw It Away”
3. Inner City ”Big Fun (Lando Kal Remix)”
4. Ghosts On Tape ”Midnight Moves”
5. Zackey Force Funk ”The Split”
6. Lazer Sword ”Shot In The Nite”
7. Machinedrum ”SXLND (Demo)”
8. Maniac ”G.R.I.M.E.”
9. Rebound X ”Rhythm N’ Gash”
10. Terror Danjah ”Haunted”
11. Gucci Mane ”Stupid Wild (ft. Lil Wayne, Cam’ron)”
12. DVA ”Keep Up (4X4 VIP Mix)”
13. Slugabed ”Ultra Heat Treated”
14. Fantastic Mr. Fox ”Brandy Remix”
15. Crookers ”No Security (Rustie Remix Instrumental)”

FACT mix 134: Ewan Pearson

Cita:
Ewan Pearson is at the controls for today’s FACT mix, a thirty minute rocket-ride through the sounds that are currently preoccupying the acclaimed DJ, producer and remixer.

Based in Berlin, UK-hailing Pearson has carved out quite a career over the past decade, as in-demand for commercial production projects as he is for his more underground offerings. He’s perhaps best known for his studious work behind-the-glass for Tracey Thorn, The Rapture, M83 and most recently Delphic, but the original music he has sporadically recorded with cohort Al Usher as Partial Arts (see the brilliant ‘Cruising’ and bell-tastic ‘Trauermusik’) is equally, if not more, deserving of your attention. Then there’s the remix work: Ewan Pearson is one hell of a prolific remixer. Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Alter Ego, Feist, Royksopp, Franz Ferdinand and the Pet Shop Boys - these are just a mattering of the artists he’s re-worked over the years.

A man of fine taste (see his Enthusiasm blog for uncommonly witty reviews of new music), Pearson is naturally a much-rated DJ, and in addition to an eternally hectic gig schedule he’s found the time to create three excellent mix CDs: Sci:Fi:Hi:Fi: Vol.3, Fabric 35 and, most recently, We Are Proud of Our Choices. Out now on Kompakt, We Are Proud of Our Choices showcases Pearson’s penchant for the more melodic and mellifluous end of the electronic music spectrum, and is well worth a sniff.

In the meantime, tuck into this small but perfectly formed FACT mix from the man, kicking off with a remix of The xx’s ‘VCR’ by It’s A Fine Line (Ivan Smagghe and Tim Paris), and taking in productions from the likes of Ost & Kjex and Chez Damier.
Tracklist:

1.The XX – VCR (It’s A Fine Line Remix) [Young Turks]
2. Alex Smoke – Lux+ [Hum & Haw]
3. Willie Graaf & Tucillo – Give You Up (Damier’s A Little More Mix) [Freerange]
4.Mes – Back to Basics (Motorcitysoul Remix) [SAW]
5.Manik – Rau Down Low [Ovum]
6.Catz vs Ibi Tijani – Word Problems [Catz Musik]
7.Ost & Kjex ft. Mung – Dirty Mind [Luna Flicks]

FACT mix 135: Elijah & Skilliam

Cita:
This Friday’s FACT mix is the work of modern grime standard bearers Elijah and Skilliam.

One of the most inspirational DJing partnerships in the UK, Elijah made a name for himself as the author of the humble Butterz blog, and one of the people behind Grime Forum, an active part of the grime scene which filled a hole left by Rinse FM and RWD’s declining forums and has since become the key hub for grime news and online controversy. More importantly, it spanned sister sites like Grimepedia, an online information source for a genre long associated with misinformation.

They’ve also done more than almost any grime DJs to date to turn the focus of an MC-dominated genre back to behind the decks. Speaking to Pitchfork recently, Elijah explains that he “loves the MCs”, but “[focuses] on the instrumental side because most MCs still don’t do vocal great productions. I’m not into the hype, because it is a distraction from the music.” Three years ago, Rinse FM’s most hyped shows were the ones with the most MCs – now it’s mostly instrumental marathons with Elijah, Skilliam and their peers JJ, Silencer and more.

What’s key with Elijah and Skilliam’s sets is the sheer amount of digging for new material they do, and their constant willingness to play tunes from new, often relatively unknown grime producers over more fashionable artists. While many grime DJs rely on old classics and modern anthems from the likes of Joker for a reaction, Elijah and Skilliam focus on new producers that they believe in, and a significant part of the recent rise in profile of SRC, Swindle, Royal T, D.O.K. and more can be attributed to them. This year, their Butterz label (Butterz 001, Terror Danjah’s ‘Bipolar‘ is out now) looks set to make that commitment physical.

“”I know there are loads of people in their bedrooms making grime for the love, and are not sure what to do with it because they don’t know any MCs.” Elijah explains in that aforementioned Pitchfork interview. “The DJs haven’t really made themselves easy to get in contact with, nor do they actively seek out and play the new ones they find. Some weeks I listen to nearly 100 new beats people sent [to me].”

It should come as no surprise then, that Elijah and Skilliam’s FACT mix is packed – packed – with exclusives. There’s unreleased and forthcoming material from SRC, Skepta, Joker, Terror Danjah (in fact, there’s a collaboration between the two titled ‘Gully Goon Estate’), Royal T, Starkey – download it below.
Tracklist:

1. Spooky – Murderer (Oil Gang)
2. Joker & Terror Danjah – Gully Goon Estate
3. Newham Generals – Hard (Digital Soundboy)
4. DOK – Sweet & Sour

FACT mix 136: Sinden

Cita:
This Monday’s FACT mix is the work of Kiss 100 and Fabric’s Graeme Sinden.

With a wide-reaching vision of club music that he describes as “all-embracing, fun, disparate and twisted up”, Sinden has been one of the UK’s premier DJs for a while now, riding a thrilling line between tear-out club music and discerning selections that most DJs fall either side of. He’s compiled a Fabriclive CD, and has worked with Switch, Herve / The Count, Rye Rye, Santigold and more in his time.

This coming month, him and Sbtrkt will inaugurate Grizzly, Sinden’s new label, with a collaborative single. Time we thought, to get Sinden on the FACT mix, and your man obviously doesn’t disappoint, delivering a mix packed with upfront material from Sbtrkt (including ‘Kind of Familiar’, one of the Sinden collaborations due for release on Grizzly), Deep Teknologi’s T. Williams, Ill Blu, Roska, Dubbel Dutch, Egyptrixx, Brodinski, The Martin Brothers and more.

8. Samo Sound Boy – Wacka Flocka [dub]

FACT mix 137: Simbad

Cita:
A member of various groups, including Izmabad (with Karizma), Les Barons and Marathon Men, Simbad has been releasing singles and albums since 2001, with a trademark sound that thrives on untreated, right-first-time instrumentation and warm analog synths on the sort of broken tip that brings to mind recent peer Altered Natives.

We’ve been trying to get him to do a FACT mix for ages now, but with the help of the Sunsplash Festival, where Simbad, Jamie Lidell and more will be playing this summer, we finally pinned him down between tours.

The results are immaculate, with Pepe Bradock, Ramadanman, Shed, Rhythm & Sound, Burial (Simbad’s own beautiful remix of ‘Fostercare’) and more featuring. Tracklist follows the download link, turn the page for a full interview with Simbad.
Tracklist:

1. Rhythm & Sound - See Mi Yah

7. Aroop Roy ft Sacha Williamson – Lonely Years (Simbad Dub)
8. Ezel ft Tamara Wellons – In My Lifetime (Deetron Remix)
9. Karizma - Groove A’K'Ordingly (Atjazz Remix)
10. Shed - Masque
11. I.D & Baobinga – Man Down

FACT mix 138: A Guy Called Gerald

Cita:
A founding member of 808 State, Manchester’s Gerald Simpson helped create some of acid house’s most future-rushing and globally successful moments. He worked on the ‘State’s Newbuild LP and Quadrastate EP (home to ‘Pacific State’) before going solo, and hitt #12 in the UK charts with the completely nuts ‘Voodoo Ray’.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Simpson began to embrace influences from the nascent hardcore scene, issuing a number of groundbreaking 12″s on his Juicebox label that culminated in the release of the 1992 album 28 Gun Bad Boy (check the title track for an all-time British soundsystem classic). He followed in 1995 with the gloriously knotted, soulful and uniquely psychedelic Black Secret Technology, arguably the finest jungle LP ever made.

While many producers of the same vintage have settled for a life of creative water-treading, stuck-in-a-timewarp DJ sets and dodgy film cameos, Gerald has really kept his end up, and then some. Relocating to Berlin some years ago, he has focussed his sound into an instantly recognisable brand of sleek, organic techno, releasing records on labels like Sender and Perlon. Next month he’s set to release Tronic Jazz, his second LP for the Laboratory Instinct imprint, and this Saturday, April 10, he’ll be headlining Feeding Werk, a very special night at Plan B in Brixton, celebrating the sounds of Werk Discs (home to Actress, Lone and Lukid, who’ll all be making appearances, along with Pariah, Dave ID and more).
Tracklist:

1. Trompetenrohren – Matt Star
2. Redemption (Original Mix) – Deep Naked
3. Frank The Janitor – Voodeux
4. Zit – Martin Woerner
5. Hebbie Jeebies – Voodeux

FACT mix 139: Alex Smoke

Cita:
Most producers take a few years to mature, but ever since he first set eardrums thrumming with his debut ‘Random As’ 12″ in 2002, Alex Smoke – real name Alex Menzies – has been releasing work far more visceral and sophisticated than that of people twice his age. His sound is rooted in sinewy experimental techno, and can be heard in full on effect on devastating dancefloor 12″s for Vakant and Soma, as well as the more expansive, nuanced LPs Incommunicado and Paradolia, and of course his club-quaking live sets as well.

Having long harboured an interest in minimalism and modern classical composition, Menzies got the opportunity to remix Steve Reich in 2006, acquitting himself beautifully, and more recently has been working with the renowned Scottish Ensemble on a piece called Kinesis. This month sees the release of Lux, his third studio album, and his boldest offering yet. Though techno is still very much in its blood, Lux is a more structurally odd and exploratory record than its predecessors, disorientingly sensuous and totally unpredictable.

You can get some idea of what to expect of Lux from ‘Ikos’, which Menzies opens his FACT mix with. After a reflective start, it doesn’t take long for our man to reach a gallop, dropping fresh meat from Claro Intelecto, Levon Vincent, MMM (the ubiquitous ‘Nous Sommes MMM’) and Lory D, and trusty steppers from the likes of Floating Points and Zomby. Shackleton, Brinkmann, Steve Pointdexter, Actress and Autechre also feature in what is, quite frankly, a heavy, heavy selection. Enjoy it, and check our Q&A with Alex over the page.
Tracklist:

1. Alex Smoke – Ikos (Hum+Haw)
2. Autechre – R Ess (Warp)
3. Zomby – Test Me For A Reason (Hyperdub)
4. Shackleton – (No More) Negative Thoughts (Perlon)
5. EPY – Hannah (Pomelo)
6. The Seducers – Unavoidable Infiltrators (Cytown)
7. Deadbeat/Fenin – Teach The Devil’s Son (Echochord Colour)
8. Levon Vincent – Double Jointed Sex Freak Pt 2 (Novel)
9. Claro Intelecto – New Life (Modern Love)
10. Brinkmann – Lucky Hands (Max Ernst)
11. Steve Poindexter – Maniac (Area’s Lost Meaning Version) (Mathematics)
12. Fever Ray – Seven (Marcel Dettmann Remix) (Rabid)
13. Lory D – Street Vision (Rephlex)
14. MMM – Nous Sommes (MMM)
15. Actress – Paint, Straw And Bubbles (Zomby Remix) (Honest Jons)
16. Floating Points – K&G Beat (Planet Mu)
