Entrevista a Jody Wisternoff

An interview "Way Out There" with Jody Wisternoff




Having had a career spanning more than half his life Jody Wisternoff is somewhat of a young yet seasoned veteran of dance music. With Way Out West having delivered and toured their third studio album titled "Don't Look Now" in 2005 Jody took the opportunity to amerce himself once again in the studio in pursuit of his first solo material. In 2006 Jody's first solo track titled COLD DRINK HOT GIRL was released with universal approval.

An atmospheric, emotional house record which was the #1 selling track on www.beatport.com (USA) for a staggering 5 weeks, Cool Cuts & Buzz Chart positions (UK) and support from DJs including Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seaman, Armin Van Buuren. This summer his huge underground hit Starstrings was rereleased on Ministry of Sound from Be Yourself Music in Holland that was first snapped up and caught the immediate attention of the dj elite. Now touring consistently as Way Out West (DJ set) as well as under his own moniker you will find him at the cutting edge, embracing exciting fresh sounds, shunning the populist/lowest common denominator fodder. Jody's passion for music will always keep him ahead of the game. His Way out There radio show is part of the radiosyndication and more fm radio stations are requesting it as satisfaction is guaranteed.

1) When and where you were born?

Jody: I was born in Bristol, UK , on the 25th November 1973.

2) When was your fist contact with electronic music and which record was the one that has inspired you to become a dj and next producer?

Jody: My parents were pretty open minded musically so im sure i was exposed to all sorts of unusual electronic music when i was a kid, but it was Mantronix and Run DMC that really made me want to produce beats and learn how to dj. I was more into the hip hop vibe when i was young, house music came later.

3) When was your first production and for which label? Please tell us the influences that you have in your productions. Are emotions and a particular situation or other artists such as composers or producers as well?

Jody: The first record i put out was under the name Tru Funk Posse - Break the Beat. It was on 3stripe records and produced by Smith n Mighty who were heroes of mine so it was an incredible experience.I was 16 at the time, my little brother who now records under the name SJ Esau was the rapper, and it did pretty well , even getting played by Tim Westwood. Before that i used to sell cassette tapes at school of tracks i had made when i was supposed to be doing homework.
I take inspiration from general life experiences, gigs, getting new bits of equipment, other peoples tracks, movie soundtracks, the list is endless.

4) What kind of equipment do you use in your production set up? Which one is the software or hardware that you enjoy more to work with?

Jody: I write using Ableton live and then arrange and mix in Protools. For sound source i use a mixture of hardware and vsts. A few of my favourite synths in the studio are the Jupiter 8 , the macbeth M5N, SH5 and SH101. Softsynths i love include Reaktor, Massive ,arp2600, Atmosphere and many many more. I also love to use samples from unusual online sources, and vinyl of course.

5) Along with your partner in crime Nick Warren, you have the Way out West project. Would you like to share with us when and how the whole idea came about?

Jody: Way Out West was born because i was producing a track Nick had written at the time when he was recording under the name Echo,and this would have been maybe 15 years ago. For the B side mix i was more involved in the writing process, and so we came up with the idea of calling it a Way Out West remix. Because we had such strong studio chemistry , we decided to continue this Way Out West idea, and the rest is history.

6) Is it possible to tell us the best and worst moment (common experience) that you had with Nick touring or working in the studio?

Jody: The best touring experience was when we did the WOW live tour across america in 2005. We hired a proper tour-bus for 1 month, and it was really exciting living in that bubble. Some of the best gigs were actually the month prior to this, when we supported Faithless in Australia and New Zealand for a bunch of stadium dates. However, Australia was also the setting for one of the most harrowing experiences of my life, when the year before this whilst doing a Gatecrasher tour one of the engines blew up on a flight between Sydney and Melbourne. I shat my pants !!! Luckily the pilot got us down safely, but it was not something id wish to go thru again anytime soon.

7) Very soon, your new Way out West track Spaceman will be out and you have included it in your famous podcast too. Please describe to our readers, what they can exactly expect with this release?

Jody: - Spaceman is pretty much a return to the tradional Way Out West style, in that it incorporates rolling breakbeats, dubby basslines , lots of prog rock samples and ecstasy chords. Robert Babicz remix is more on the trippy techno tip which i love.

8) Are you going to follow up this single with whole album and if yes when we can expect this?

Jody: The album is still in the writing stage but its going really well. However, its taking longer than usual because we both have so many other commitments, solo careers etc. Expect it to be finished later this year and released early 2009.

9) You decided also to work solo under your name and your Stastrings track on Beyourself music became a worldwide hit. Why you have decided to produce solo tracks too and are you going to prepare soon an album or mix compilation?

Jody: I decided to pursue a solo career a couple of years ago because its a very good way to enhance my DJ profile which we all know is the money maker during these current times. The studio is in my house, and ive always made music on my own as well as with Nick. So i figured it makes more sense to release these solo efforts under my own name. Starstrings is being rereleased this summer on Ministry of sound, and Ive almost completed my solo album which looks like it will be released on beyourself. As for a DJ comp, there are a few ideas in the pipeline.

10) If a tune is selected for release do the labels ask you to make changes and the track to sound close to something you have in mind? Usually that consideration is if it will sell or not?

Jody: I like to work closely with the label A & R , so im always open to suggestions and changes. However, ultimately i make the final decision and i can usually feel when its finally right. I don't conciously write music with record sales in mind, infact i think this would be a stifling process.

11) Are you going to carry on releasing material on vinyl or this it is going to be digital only? If yes, does this mean that there is a resurrection for the vinyl market or you see the future going totally in the digital direction?

Jody: Vinyl still sells to a niche market, however for me its 100% digital now ( CDS included ). If i get sent a record, its annoying because i have to rip it to play it out. Infact , i havent been sent or bought vinyl for over a year. I do still feel the occasional stab of nostalgia however.

12) Do you have an example of an artist that you predict that he/she will be very big in 2008 and you are very proud that you help to get his break into the scene?

Jody: To be honest no i haven't made a discovery who i thinks gonna blow up bigtime. I do get sent and support a lot of tracks from young producers and theres a few people who are def making an impression on me, such as Orlie & Martie, Claes Rosen, BarBQ and Glenn Morrison.

13) Your current top 3 tracks and your favorite all time classic and why? Are those connected to a special moment in your life?

Jody: My current top 3 tracks are Chymera - Parelo ( Jody Wisternoff remix ) , The Chemical Brothers - Electronic BattleWeapon10, and Morandi - Angels ( Ok Corral's angels aloud remix)
My favourite all time classic dance track could possibly be Jam and Spoon - Odyssey to Anyoona. It just encapsulates everything that was incredible about dance music at the time. Beautiful strings,ethnic vocals, dubby bass and rolling beats.

14) In which countries you have performed as a dj? Where did you find the best crowd and you liked every minute of your dj set? Is there a country that you want to perform but you have not managed yet to do it?

Jody: North and south america , Europe and eastern europe all the way over to the far east of russia, South east asia and Australia, and South Africa. I havent really played much in the middle east or india , and id love to hit Tokyo.

My favourite recent gig was Cielo In Newyork. Just an incredible crowd and perfect soundsystem, the ultimate gig really.

15) Would you like to share with us your best and worst memory from a dj performance? Have you ever had a naughty experience with a groupie?

Jody: There have been so many good DJing experiences over the years, one of the best was probably in Acapulco , Mexico in 2005. Each hotel room had its own private little pool, and the event lasted 4 days in this beautiful location. One of my worst experiences would probably be when i fell down a man hole in Kuala Lumpar. I had to be rushed to a hospital when i was supposed to be on the decks, and i sustained a seriously large bump on my shin for months.
As for groupies, im a married man now so this is all in my past , but i do remember a time in Manilla when this girl was desperately trying to give me a BJ whilst i was djing. Eeeww ..

16) Do you believe that dj mag Top 100 djs list reflect what really people like globally or you think that the results are influenced from other factors as well?

Jody: It is a semi accurate reflection but there are other contributing factors, such as cheating. Last year i think i came in at 154 , which is very encouraging for me ,however i dont think the chart is that important and there are many incredible djs who are never included.

17) What is your opinion about Creamfields, Tribal Gathering, Dance Valley or Nature One? Do you like those big festivals or you prefer clubs and small intimate places?

Jody: I much prefer small intimate venues. The style of music i play i think is much more suited to small - midsize venues. I like eye contact with the crowd and feeling that you are involved, not standing on a huge stage 50 meters from the front. However, Djing at large raves back in the day were some of my most memorable experiences, hardcore rave music and big trance stuff always sounded great in a field.

18) Danceradio.gr is one of the leading dance web radio stations. What is your opinion about the web radio and do you have a web radio show? Do you see internet vital tool in the expansion of dance music culture today?

Jody: Internet radio is a fantastic development for dancemusic. I have a monthly show on proton radio ' Way Out There ', and have just started a monthly show on Frisky radio entitled ' Intensified' , as well as my monthly podcast and various syndication. Its just a great way for us to play new music to people all over the world, not just at clubs. It also helps with DJ profile and bookings.

19) Also you are taking part to the radio syndication project that distributes famous radio shows all over fm radio stations in Greece. What is your opinion about that project?

Jody: Im extremely happy to be involved in Danceradio.gr syndication. I love the greek spirit and always have an amazing time whenever i come over to play. Infact, me and Nick are playing in Crete on the 28th , i cant wait !!

20) Have you ever regretted your involvement with the dance music industry? Would you like to tell us the pros and cons of the dance music bizz in particular?

Jody: No i have never regretted my choice to work in this industry, however there are times when it can be very frustrating due to the extremely competitive and unreliable nature of this field . I also damaged my hearing a few years ago after a gig, and i now have a constant ringing tone in my ears that never stops ( Tinnitus ) but i suppose this is the price you pay for having an incredible job that you love doing.

21) Your message to our dance radio web site visitors?

1) ¿Cuándo y dónde usted nació?

Jody: Nací en Bristol, Reino Unido, el 25 de noviembre de 1973.

3) ¿Cuándo fue tu primera producción y para los que etiqueta? Por favor díganos las influencias que tienen en sus producciones. Son las emociones y una situación particular o de otros artistas como compositores o productores como así?

Jody: El primer disco i se ponen a cabo bajo el nombre de Tru Funk Posse - Break the Beat. Se 3stripe en los registros y producido por Smith Mighty n que fueron héroes de las minas por lo que fue una increíble experience.I fue de 16 en el momento, mi hermanito que ahora los registros con el nombre de Esaú SJ fue el rapero, y lo hizo bastante bien , Incluso llegar desempeñado por Tim Westwood. En cuanto a un DJ comp, hay unas cuantas ideas en la tubería.

12) ¿Tiene usted un ejemplo de un artista que le predicen que él / ella va a ser muy grandes en 2008 y que está muy orgulloso de que le ayudará a obtener su descanso en la escena?

Jody: Para ser honesto no i no han hecho un descubrimiento que i piensa que va a volar bigtime. Hacer llegar el apoyo y envió una gran cantidad de pistas de jóvenes productores y theres unas pocas personas que se ganó a hacer una impresión en mí, como Orlie y Martie, Claes Rosen, BarBQ y Glenn Morrison.

13) Su actual top 3 pistas y su favorita de todos los tiempos clásicos y por qué? Son los relacionados con un momento especial en tu vida?

Jody: Norte y Sur América, Europa y Europa del Este todo el camino al lejano oriente de Rusia, el Sudeste Asiático y Australia, y Sudáfrica. I havent realmente desempeñado tanto en el medio este o india, id y el amor a golpear Tokio.

Mi favorito era reciente concierto A Cielo Newyork. Sólo una increíble multitud y sonido perfecto, el último concierto de verdad.

15) ¿Le gustaría compartir con nosotros tu mejor y peor recuerdo de un dj desempeño? ¿Alguna vez has tenido un lío con una groupie?

Jody: Ha habido tantas buenas experiencias pinchar lo largo de los años, uno de los mejores fue probablemente en Acapulco, Mexico en 2005. Cada habitación de hotel tiene su propia piscina privada poco, y el evento duró 4 días en este bello lugar. Uno de mis peores experiencias, probablemente, i cuando se cayó un hombre agujero en Kuala Lumpar. Tuve que se apresuraron a un hospital i cuando se suponía que era en los platos, i sostenido y un gran chichón en serio en mi espinilla durante meses.
En cuanto a las groupies, im un hombre casado por lo que esta ahora es todo en mi pasado, pero yo recuerdo una vez en Manila cuando esta chica se desesperadamente tratando de darme una BJ, mientras que i se pinchar. Eeeww ..

16) ¿Cree usted que dj mag 100 mejores djs lista de reflejar lo que realmente la gente le gusta el mundo o usted cree que los resultados están influidos por otros factores como así?

Jody: Es un semi reflejo exacto, pero hay otros factores que contribuyen a ello, como trampas. El año pasado creo que vino a por 154, lo cual es muy alentador para mí, sin embargo No me parece que el cuadro es importante y que hay muchos djs increíble que nunca se incluyeron.

17) ¿Cuál es su opinión acerca de Creamfields, Tribal Gathering, Dance Valley o la Naturaleza Uno? ¿Te gusta los grandes festivales o si prefiere los clubes y los pequeños lugares íntimos?

Jody: yo prefiero los pequeños lugares íntimos. El estilo de música i juego que creo que es mucho más adaptada a los pequeños - de tamaño mediano lugares. Me gusta el contacto visual con la multitud y la sensación de que usted está involucrado, no de pie en un enorme escenario de 50 metros desde la parte delantera. Sin embargo, Djing en general raves en el día son algunas de mis experiencias más memorables, hardcore rave y la música trance grandes cosas siempre sonaba muy bien en un campo.

18) Danceradio.gr es uno de los principales danza web estaciones de radio. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre la web de la radio y tiene usted una web de radio? ¿Ves Internet herramienta vital en la expansión de la música de baile cultura hoy?

Jody: radio por Internet es una fantástica para el desarrollo dancemusic. Tengo una muestra mensual de protones en la radio 'Way Out There', y acaban de comenzar un espectáculo mensual a Frisky radio titulado "Intensificación», así como mi podcast mensual de distribución y diversas. 19) también está tomando parte a la radio de sindicación de proyecto que distribuye de radio famoso en todo fm estaciones de radio en Grecia. ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre ese proyecto?

Jody: Estoy muy feliz de estar implicados en Danceradio.gr sindicación. Me gusta el espíritu griego y siempre tienen un tiempo increíble cada vez que vengo a jugar. De hecho, yo y Nick están jugando en Creta el día 28, i cant esperar!

20) ¿Alguna vez se lamentó de su participación con la industria de la música de baile? ¿Le gustaría que nos diga los pros y los contras de la música de baile bizz en particular?

Jody: No nunca he lamentado mi elección a trabajar en esta industria, sin embargo hay ocasiones en las que puede ser muy frustrante debido a la extremadamente competitiva y poco fiable la naturaleza de este campo. También dañado mi vista unos años atrás después de un concierto, y ahora tengo un constante tono de timbre en mis oídos que nunca se detiene (Tinnitus), pero supongo que este es el precio que paga por tener un trabajo increíble que te encanta hacer.

21) Su mensaje a nuestro baile de radio visitantes del sitio web?
