Jaren's introduction to dance music happened when she met Matt Cerf in 2005. Soon after, the two started collaborating with Shawn Mitiska under the name of Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren. The success of the Retrobyte remix of "Light the Skies" placed Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren solidly among dance music’s next generation of heavy hitters. The track was included on Armin Van Buuren's A State of Trance 2007 and named as one of his top tracks of 2007.
Sameer, Jacquelina and Christina Chen caught up with Jaren to interview her for TrancePodium.
Jaren , definitely one of my many favourites to interview, we thank you for this second chance this year to pick your brain and boggle your mind with a few questions. How are you doing, whats new in the life of Mrs. Cerf?
Thanks for having me. I'm doing well, thank you. Writing my little butt off, really. I've been working with a few labels, writing for their artists. It's a blast, I absolutely love it.
Just recently you have directed us to your
Jaren on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads to have a melodic peak at your vocal art in your folk album endeavour, is there perhaps any background info you could give us on this project of yours; your train of thought, its style - the emotion used?
Sure. This project is what I moved to Los Angeles to create. The first song on the album was written when I was 17 and the last song I wrote when I was 22. I was very 'angsty' I guess you could say. I lived in my own world and consequently created this album because of it. I think it's pretty grounded considering I was so young, and I'm always learning new things when I listen to it. It's amazing how one's perception can change so quickly in such a short period of time.
Being part of this interview ieam, as I have said many a time before - I LOVE my Job, this question purely for my interest, Jaren, what colour are your eyes?
Heh heh heh. Multitone. Blue when I'm by the ocean, but green most of the time.
What would be the first electronic dance music tune you ever heard?
Mmm... probably 'Sandstorm' before I even knew it was 'Sandstorm'. I know it played a million times at all the University Of Wyoming basketball games when I was growing up.
Do you write your lyrics?
Yes. I write all my own lyrics except for "Walk Away". Matt had most of the lyrics for "With Me" and "Let Me Breathe", but I co-wrote.
Is there ever a time where you just want to tell your manager to cancel your gigs for the week and go lay on the beach?
All the time. Just kidding. I tell him to cancel all my gigs so I can focus on writing. I'm terribly sorry, but I feel I'm much more a writer than a performer.
If you were to think back to when you were just starting out and someone just told you “no” for a gig, or production or something, what was it that kept you going and not just pack it all up?
The fact that you can only get so many 'no's' before someone says 'yes'. I believed I could do it and the people I surrounded myself with also had the same feeling so it didn't matter if 100 people said no.
Somebody would say yes. We just had to find that person/producer/promoter.
For the romantic in all of us, how did you and Matt meet?
Hehe. We were introduced by a very good producer/friend of ours at a party. It was love at first sight. For me, anyways. Matt was probably like "Wow, this girl must be easy. She keeps hugging me." He was a challenge, I tell ya. I had to promise him a house in the hills and a ferrari on our first date. Just kidding.
Again me loving my Job - Is there any chance you could give me Josie`s mobile number?
Sure, but she never answers it. She's really remote, I tell ya. She loves the country life. NOTE - I think her fiance (who's about as big as Tito Ortiz) might have a problem with that.
Any info you could perhaps tease us with on your releases for 2009?
Hmm... Well. It looks like Armin is going to release our next single pretty soon. It's called "Beggin' You" and it's already getting a lot of hype considering how few people have heard it. I hope y'all enjoy it. It's our best work, I think.
Thanks for this chance! Take care!
You too, now! Tell everyone at TrancePodium I say 'Howdy!' xoxo Jaren
