Jennifer Rene was born with music in her soul.
Singing and performing since she was very little, writing songs since she was 10, those around her knew she was destined to be involved in music somehow for her future. Which is exactly what happened. Ever since her first real club experience in Chicago, Jennifer Rene knew her calling was to be a part of dance music. But not just by doing one part, by doing everything that can be done for this music genre.
Our interview team, Sameer and Jacquelina caught up with Jennifer to ask her few questions.
Miss Rene, we appreciate the time you've taken to sit down with us, and allow us to interview you! We're extremely curious to know how you came into the electronic music scene. When did you first discover the EDM world and what made you want to contribute to it?
Hello Jacquelina and Sameer, it’s my pleasure! So thank you! I grew up in a very small town where not many people know EDM. However being the late night owl I am I’d stumble across radio stations playing some of the more commercial tracks between the hours of midnight and 4am. That’s how I discovered Lasgo, Ian van Dahl, 4 Strings, Alice Deejay etc. My love for the fast beat grew and I just searched random dance categories on music search engines until I found ATB which lead me to Blank and Jones which lead me to Paul van Dyk. Which lead me to heaven.
You started off working with Jose Amnesia with your breakout track "Louder". What inspired the song "Louder" lyrically speaking? How did you come into contact with Jose?
Louder is a song about not being able to tell a person how you really feel about them. Being too scared to take a risk and love someone. Let alone let them love you in return. I befriended Arturo Bonetti through myspace and he was a friend of Jose’s. He said "I have this friend who is looking for a vocalist". I was a big fan of Jose’s track “Second Day” so I said “Yes of course!”
Post production working with Jose on your breakout track, Armada recruits you, and you become one of their official artists as well as one of their most recognized vocalists. Who from Armada took notice of you and what was the biggest reason that solidified your decision in joining forces with the label?
I believe Arturo sent the track to Armin himself and it was Armin who heard it first and loved it. They’ve been nothing but wonderful and supportive of me from the beginning. It’s like a big family over there.
Where was the first place you performed and do you recall which track it was that you first sang?
The first time I performed my dance tracks was at Bleu in Detroit. Above and Beyond were there. I sang “Louder” and “Wouldn’t Change A Thing”.
If you could team up with any vocalist (EDM or not) and work on a duet, who would it be, and why?
Interesting question. Vocalist wise, I guess I’d want to team up with a male vocal. I’m going to go big here and say Timbaland or Justin Timberlake. Hey, anything’s possible!
You've traveled the world sharing your love of music. Where in the world is your favourite place to be? Does this place contribute to the inspiration of your work?
One of my favorite places gig wise is Trinidad. Mainly because I first played there when I was barely known and have played many times since and each time watched the fanbase grow there. They are such wonderful fun people and they love a good party. Not to mention it’s beautiful and always sunny there. This girl loves her beach. I would say any gig I play at no matter where it is in the world inspires me. Each night after the show when I go back to my hotel room I’m scribbling down ideas because I always get inspired by the crowds.
Being an acclaimed vocalist, with DJ and "up & coming" producer as titles in your rankings as well, is there perhaps a non-musical accomplishment you wish to endeavor?
Why yes! I want to write a book. I want to do some designing whether it be clothes or jewelry. I want to learn how to speak fluent Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. I want to one day finish my Physical Therapist Degree and get married and have a big family.
Looking through the plethora of travels and performances that you have under your belt, what would be the most interesting or funniest story on your journeys that you could share with us?
I guess it would have to be going through customs in different countries. For some reason I always get pulled aside and questioned! They have a hard time believing I am a DJ even though I am there with my CD's! I think it is because I always overpack so they don’t understand why I’m in their country for only 1 night yet have all these bags! I must have a suspicious face or something. The worst one was when I was detained for several hours and they took my diary away and read it. I was standing next to this man that was being questioned about how much cocaine he had swallowed. Not funny at the time but looking back now I can laugh. Needless to say I leave my diary at home from now on.
We have had some brief chats in the past, unfortunately I couldn't muster up the courage, however leading to this question now I have read many "self-motivational books" and attended many seminars on the matter as well, Miss Rene, may I please have your mobile number?
If I told you... I’d have to kill you
Fair enough. Moving away from my needy question above, Miss Jennifer, what could the loyal fans expect from you this year?
A piece of art from my heart that I hope listening ears will enjoy. I hope they will discover the many sides to me. Once the album is finished I will be focusing on touring and putting together a radio show. And dancing and singing with trance lovers everywhere!
Jennifer Rene is currently hard at work writing and recording new material and has many exciting projects waiting just around the corner, She can't wait to begin performing and DJing live. Watch out, because this girl has only just begun to show what she is capable of.
