| Emma Hewitt Interview Australian born songwriter/vocalist Emma Hewitt burst onto the international dance scene in 2006 as cowriter and featured vocalist on the Chris Lake smash, Carry Me Away. Carry Me Away was premiered by Pete Tong on Radio 1 and went on to become a classic on dance floors worldwide crashing into the mainstream Top 10 in Spain and Norway and peaking at 3 on the UK Club Charts.
A recent collaboration with German trance legends Cosmic Gate resulted in the haunting and emotional track, Not Enough Time which will be the first single lifted from Cosmic Gate’s forthcoming artist album.
Our resident interviewer [BirdMan] caught up with Emma to find out more about her and possibly get her number.
How did you and Chris Lake meet?
It was just one of those serendipitous things really... I was living in London at the time, someone from my publishing company played a rough demo of mine to Chris, he got in contact and said he liked my voice and would like to work with me. Chris flew me up to Aberdeen, initially to record vocals for his track "Changes," but my style of vocals didn't particularly suit the track. We had a few hours spare, so we decided to write something new and "Carry Me Away" just kind of happened.

When did you take a liking into electronic dance music?
I have always liked electronic dance music while going out to clubs etc, but to be honest, up until the last few years I didn't know a lot about it. I grew up listening to rock music. My background as a singer has always been in heavier rock or acoustic groups, so I guess I am quite green still when it comes to electronic music. I think perhaps this is why I am so passionate about electronic music now, as this world is still very new and exciting to me, with so many possibilities!
What is your favourite place that you have toured?
I have really only been touring around Australia so far, but I am really looking forward to getting over to the East Coast of America and Europe over the next few months!
Who inspires you musically outside of the electronic dance music scene?
Ooh, lots of people! Placebo, Tori Amos, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Tegan and Sarah, The Editors, Tom Waits, Nick Cave. Currently I am feeling very inspired by some of the war time singers such as Vera Lynn, there is something very Melancholic and beautiful about those melodies.
Definitely a friendly person from the brief chats we have had before, if you had to describe your personality in just but one word, it would be...
Thanks Smile I guess I would say "passionate" or "uncoordinated". I can't decide...
Emma HewittIs there perhaps a producer or vocalist you would like to join forces with and create a new era of musical brilliance with?
Tiesto! Smile I'm writing a new track with him for his Allure project at the moment which is a dream come true for me. Tiesto's mix of "Silence" by Delirium is basically THE vocal trance track in my eyes and one of my all time favorite songs.
Favourite Movie?
"The City Of Lost Children" or anything by David Lynch.
Cosmic Gate - Not enough time, a tune with mighty dancefloor proportions , care to give us a tiny story on the creating of this epic tune?
Cosmic Gate actually just got in contact with me through myspace, they sent me the backing track and I fell in love with it. My brother and I wrote the vocals over here and emailed them back to the guys, and within litterally a few days they had the track mastered and began playing it in clubs.
What can the fans expect from you this year?
I am working on a lot of new material at the moment that I am totally excited about! I have a track coming out with Serge Devant in the next few months, I just finished writing a track with Micky Slim and am currently writing tracks with Gareth Emery, Tiesto (Allure), Andy Duguid and Mr Sam.
Considering the fact I know that you are a friendly person, I am obliged to ask the following question with high hope: Miss Hewitt, may I have your phone number?
Haha! I like your style, but phones are overrated... Don't you think it's much more mysterious to be penpals? Smile |
