We had a quick catch-up with Rising Music boss Chris Lake in order to gather his thoughts on Deadmau5 collaborations, London’s brand new clubbing hotspot matter and why you should bring a change of underwear to his gigs…
You’re playing alongside your sometime collaborator Deadmau5 at matter for the Mousetrap party October 2nd; how did you two hook up initially?

Well, we met through a mutual friend in the UK who signed a BSOD record via another friend. I thought I heard something promising in his sound so I got in touch directly. We chatted a lot and he sent me the most ridiculous amount of tracks through online that he had done before, and I was blown away.

The common thread between you both appears to be a mutual love of melody, would you agree with that?

Yeah, I think that is quite accurate. Well, scratch that.

Melody and rude noise!

Are there any plans to collaborate in the future?

Yes there is. We have a few dates set aside in October to make some new choonage.

It will be good to hook up again and make some ‘melonoise’.

Have you heard much about the new venue matter? It sounds like a dream set-up from a DJ’s perspective.

I went down there a few weeks back to take a look.

It’s going to be unbelievable.

I don’t see how there is going to be another venue that will come close to this one for a while, well, until people see it and try to replicate it .

Is it in any way daunting playing of such a vast soundsystem?

Daunting? That is not the word I am thinking of.

Having said that, I am concerned; a few months ago I was playing @ Mission in Leeds, and dropped Joel’s (Deadmau5) new mix of ‘Reward is Cheese’ on their Function One sound system.

When the bass kicked in, my wife was near the speakers. She took a musical blow to the body and had to get out of the room, she felt physically sick.

So, it’s not daunting, I’m just concerned that a night with Chris Lake and Deadmau5 baselines banging out of the speakers may cause some people to shit their pants!!

How do you view the scene in London presently in view of all the recent club closures?

Well, it’s not good to have club closures of course, but change doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

There is certainly a great incentive for new and high quality clubs to be built and I am sure that is what we will see happen.

What’s coming up for you production wise?

Well, the next release on Rising Music is ‘Chris Lake Remixed’. It’s got Rene Amesz & Adam Shaw mixes of ‘Deadline’, the track I featured on my Essential Mix last year, a Rudi Stalker version of ‘Release’ and Mastiksoul’s reworking of ‘Only One’.

Following that I have my new piano single called ‘If you Knew’ featuring vocals from Nastala. We shot a video for this one early in the summer… I just can’t wait to get it out there! Very excited!
